Essential oils are natural substances that are extracted from flowers, herbs, trees, resins and spices. Depending on their properties, oils can soothe, relax, heal, energize and more. For instance: eucalyptus is excellent for the respiratory system; lemongrass stimulates digestion; orange is a mood elevator; and sandalwood aids anti-aging and is spiritually uplifting.
Several aromatherapy treatments exist. By keeping a few essential oils on hand you can treat yourself to any of the following applications at a moment’s notice.
1) Aromatherapy Bath: Draw a warm bath. Once the tub is full, add about eight drops of essential oils. Stir up the water to dissipate the oils and soak for fifteen minutes.
2) Shower: Pamper yourself by rubbing your body with essential oils that have been mixed with a carrier oil and then shower.
3) Vaporization: Fill a room with essence by placing two or three drops of essential oil on a light bulb.
4) Compress: Add four drops of essential oil into a half-pint of very hot water. Place strips of toweling in the water, wring out, and place over areas that require special attention.
5) Inhalation: Boil water and place in a bowl. Add about seven drops of essential oil to the water. Place a towel over your head and inhale for five minutes.
