Crossing the threshold from one season into the next is a great time to freshen our surroundings by clearing the air and bringing the airiness of the outdoors in. It’s important to clean up our acts and get serious about the air that we breathe. |

Breathing easy with air purifiers
Dust, dirt, allergens, toxins, chemicals, cleaning products, viruses and germs are all dangerous air pollutants and should be eradicated from our environment. But rest assured there are several ways we can “clear the air.”
The slant on plants
Not only are plants beautiful and have a calming effect on people, they are also very beneficial. They improve the air that we breathe. Plants purify and cleanse the air by filtering out carbon dioxide, pollutants and toxins, which are often found in carpet, furniture, plastics, plywood, varnishes, paints and adhesives. Plants also provide us with indispensable oxygen, essential to our existence.
Bamboo palm, Chinese evergreen, aloe vera, spider plants, flowering mums, dumbcane, golden pothos, ficus, peace lilies, gerbera daisies, English ivy, Mauna Loa plants and mother-in-laws-tongue all purify indoor air. However, philodendrons, spider plants and pothos are most efficient at removing formaldehyde, while gerbera daisies and chrysanthemums are effective in the removal of toxins and benzene, a known carcinogen.
Crystal clear
Ions are particles in the air that are negatively charged, positively charged or neutral. An environment rich in negative ions has, despite their name, an amazingly positive effect on our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.
They neutralize positive ions, help purify the air and can significantly increase our energy and mental awareness.
Although the most natural way to experience these healthy ions is to take a walk through a park, in the mountains or by the sea, we can use natural crystal salts to add negative ions and improve air quality, as they are natural air ionizers.
Salt crystal lamps, carved from chunks of ancient salt rock, are being used in many holistic spas and medical treatment centres. As the lamps warm up, they not only release negative ions, they also infuse any space with radiant light and warm, therapeutic colours.
Whether vegetable or mineral, let’s help purify our surroundings with nature’s gifts…and breathe easy!
