The Act of Giving
In “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success”, Deepak Chopra has this to say about the act of giving:
"The universe operates through dynamic exchange - giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of energy in the universe. And in our willingness to give that which we seek, we keep the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives."
Here is a beautiful analogy that clearly describes the power of giving:
You walk into a room with a lit candle and notice 50 other people, each holding an unlit candle. You touch your flame to the wick of another candle, thereby creating more light, and realize that you haven’t lost anything by giving unto another.
Others in the room begin to realize this and start lighting each other’s candles until all fifty are lit. The room is now filled with light and everyone has retained their own.
That is the process and the power of giving. If you held onto your single lit candle because you were afraid to lose your own light by giving to another, your fear would prevent you from seeing the difference you can make.
The Gift That Keeps on Giving
Research has shown that helping others can lead to improved health and emotional well-being. Its benefits include: greater longevity, less stress, improved immune system and cardiovascular circulation, increased self-acceptance, stronger feelings of personal satisfaction, as well as clarity about the meaning of life.
Clinical trials at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions concluded that giving back slows down the aging process in ways that lead to a higher quality of life.
The Joy of Giving
Besides having positive effects on our health, the act of giving also invites the spirit of joy into our hearts. Most of us have felt the pleasures derived from giving at one point or another, but many of us have yet to tap into the boundless feelings of bliss that come from embracing a life in which “giving” plays a starring role.
Giving takes us from simply being successful people in the traditional sense, to being people who lead successful lives. We are living in exciting times right now, as the world of today is quickly evolving and awakening to this fact.
