Men's Skin Care
It only takes a few minutes a day - a small investment for healthy-looking skin. But be careful, not all skin is created equal. Men’s skin differs from women’s. However, the care required is very similar to that of women’s.
Male Skin Care 101
More and more men are realizing the importance of caring for their skin. A fact that is well reflected in the marketplace. However, there are still many men who don’t know where to begin when it comes to skin care.
With men’s skin being inherently oily, it is critical that they begin their skin care routine with proper cleansing. Cleansing helps remove dirt and pollutants from the skin, prevents the pores from clogging, and helps reduce blemish formation and razor rash. They should avoid using soap, as it dries out the skin and strips away the much-needed protective acid mantle (barrier to bacteria). Fragrance-free and detergent-free products are better alternatives.
All skin needs to be exfoliated. Sometimes, our natural skin exfoliation process, which sloughs off dead skin cells and reveals new ones, needs a little assistance. This is particularly true of men’s skin, as the oily nature of their skin makes exfoliating difficult. A gentle exfoliating scrub is ideal and exfoliating two to three times a week is recommended.
With most men shaving daily, thereby stripping their skin of its natural lipids and moisture content, it is essential they keep their skin moisturized. Moisturizers should be an integral part of a man’s skin care regimen. Applied immediately after shaving, a moisturizer will help keep the skin nourished, hydrated, and restore its youthful and healthy appearance. Products with the least amount of chemical additives and that are alcohol-free are best.
Men's skin is richer in collagen and elastin, which means it ages more slowly than women's skin. However, men should still be concerned about aging skin. Somewhere in their mid-forties, the dermis layer of a man’s skin thins, causing deeper wrinkles. Men can prevent and correct the signs of aging with a moisturizer that contains appropriate anti-aging properties.
Although male skin is less susceptible to the damaging effects of UV rays, it still needs to be protected from potential sun damage. This is particularly important for men with light colored eyes and hair. Applying a sunscreen before going outdoors will prevent pre-mature aging of the skin, as well as skin cancer. A moisturizer which combines sunscreen protection is a convenient choice.
